Gary Matson's "In Keepers" Single Resurfaces in New CD

Gary Matson has been working for the NYSID's Systems Bureau for decades, but between 1966 and 1968, he was a member of The In-Keepers, a New York garage band that played various local venues – including the legendary Action House in Island Park. During that time, The In-Keepers shared bills with, to name a few, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, and The Velvet Underground. The group only recorded one single during that time, but now – after decades in obscurity – the single has emerged in CD format as part of a garage band anthology, "Trip in Tyme, vol. 3" on the Manic Mustang label.

Both sides of the single are included on the CD, although the group's name is misspelled as "The Innkeepers" on the CD. Gary sings background vocals on both tracks. The release of the long out-of-print single in CD format came as a surprise to Gary as well as the other In-Keepers. The CD is sold as an import and we hear only 500 copies are available.

The single, which features a Hammond M-1 organ, has the raw energy that characterized many garage bands in the mid- to late-sixties. If you still have a fondness for "Dirty Water" by The Standells, "Time Won't Let Me" by The Outsiders or "Little Girl" by Syndicate of Sound, you'll love the In-Keepers.
